Beginner's Watercolor: For Those Who Think They Can't
Tyler Junior College Continuing Studies West Campus (903) 510-2900
(currently not scheduled)

Statement of Interest:
For decades, watercolor has been accused of being the hardest medium to paint with.  Not so!  Join us as we discover how to control… and how “not” to control this interesting medium.  There are no mistakes in watercolor, merely opportunities to try something new!  Experience the vibrancy and fluidity it offers.
Course Description:
This course will expose the student to the uniqueness of watercolors and the tools used to produce paintings in this media with the goal of encouraging the student to learn basic skills to pursue watercolor painting independently.  The course will touch on concept design, examine warm-up painting practices and give the student opportunity to paint from several still life setups or references. This course has been designed for anyone interested in learning the basics of painting in watercolor or for anyone who wants to re-learn and review their watercolor skills.  Various techniques will be presented and students will practice and apply these techniques in class.  20 course hours.

Discover Multiple Media Art
Tyler Junior College Continuing Studies West Campus (903) 510-2900
(currently not scheduled)

Statement of Interest:
Interested in a variety of art media but want to know more before investing time? Get the opportunity to work with water media collage, salt dyed silks, Ebru marbling, Suminagashi and other techniques all in one course.
Course Description:
This course will expose the student to various art media without delving into months of study on each. Students will learn to float Japanese inks on water and transfer the marbled effects to Asian papers as well as using vibrant acrylics for marbled papers or silk. They will also have the chance to work with water media collage using hand made Asian rice papers and tissues, watercolors and metallic gouache and complete a non-objectal collage. Salt-dyed silks and silk painting will be learned as students explore various painting techniques on fabric. Various painting supplies and silk fabrics are furnished with this course.  Students will get a supply list for the remaining supplies to purchase.

Non Representational Mixed Water Media Collage
(currently not scheduled)

Use hand made marbled kosi momi papers, Thai lace paper, metallic powdered gouache, and Japanese rice parchments to introduce you to a new way to explore non-representational painting with water media.  We will use old standards of shape, color and textural techniques to create a magical explosion of color and movement in your paintings.  No experience necessary, but a working knowledge of watercolor will be helpful. The morning session, after a short demo, will be spent laying on initial colors and textural items on two paintings.  The drying process will happen during the lunch hour.

When students return, textural items will be removed, collage papers adhered and the painting will be completed using watercolor paints and metallic gouache.  The entire class will be involved in positive critiques of works produced during the last half hour of class.
